Why is gun ownership in the United States not only legal, but also a federal right backed by the 2nd amendment of the Bill of Rights? This is a great question, which is arguably more important than ever to think about especially in recent times when horrifying shootings are becoming commonplace. Once you read and understand the reasoning behind the 2nd amendment, you’ll probably realize that it may not be in our best interests as citizens to accept gun control, or, in an extreme scenario, to give up our firearms.

Let’s take a look at what the 2nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution says:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The entire idea behind the creation and existence of the United States is to promote and maintain freedom. Freedom means that as a citizen, I am pretty much free to do as I wish as long as I do not impinge upon the freedom of other citizens. It also means that the city, state, or federal government has no right to take away my freedoms either. However, in a state of emergency, things can quickly go south in a country. The military can become rebellious and the government can become tyrannical. In such a state, a “well regulated Militia” would become necessary to protect ourselves as citizens. We, as gun-bearing citizens, would be that Militia.

Even if a country does not reach a state of emergency, there is always an inherent risk that our government will become tyrannical. History has shown this time and time again. Governments have the tendency to become so powerful that their own citizens fear them. This is a very dangerous scenario for the citizens of a country. The best state of affairs is for a government to fear their own citizens at some level so that they think twice before they seek to oppress their own citizens.

One major way of ensuring that our government fears us as citizens is through our right to keep and bear arms. If the government knows that many of its citizens have guns and more importantly, does not know which one of them do have guns, they cannot easily reach oppressive levels of power. They cannot simply visit your property and pull you away into a concentration camp. They cannot force you to do anything against your will. This is extremely important.

The 2nd amendment provides us with protection against the possibility of a tyrannical government. It is impossible for us, as citizens, to be free if our government reaches a state of tyranny. This is why we have the right to keep and bear arms. It is also why this right should never be infringed upon.
